Your trailerâs suspension takes an absolute beating. Between the heavy loads, the constant stopping and going, and the notoriously rough stretches of I-65, your suspension system is working overtime. But suspension issues don’t just cause a bumpy ride, they ruin tires, damage freight, and lead to massive safety hazards.
If you notice any of these five signs, itâs time to bring your trailer into our Knopp Avenue shop immediately:
- 1. Uneven Tire Wear: This is usually the first and most obvious red flag. If you are seeing cupping, scalloping, or rapid wear on the inside or outside edges of your trailer tires, your suspension is likely misaligned or you have worn-out bushings.
- 2. The Trailer Leans to One Side: If your trailer looks like it’s leaning or sagging on one side when parked on level ground, you almost certainly have a blown air bag or a broken leaf spring.
- 3. Excessive Bouncing: A trailer that bounces violently after hitting a bump (especially when empty) is a clear sign that your shock absorbers are completely shot.
- 4. Audible Clanking or Popping Noises: If you hear heavy metal-on-metal clanking when taking turns or hitting the brakes, your suspension components are loose or missing hardware.
- 5. Constantly Running Air Compressor: If your truck’s air compressor won’t shut off, you likely have a leak in your trailer’s air ride suspension system or a faulty leveling valve.
Don’t let a cheap suspension fix turn into a catastrophic breakdown.
